摘要

本论文是通过著名美剧《越狱》的台词从语用学、心理学等角度对英语双关语进行研究。
双关语在人类文明史上源远流长、经久不衰，是世界文明中最为喜闻乐见的创作手段。英语双关语是最具争议的语言现象和修辞手段。
《越狱》是美国FOX电视台2005年开始上映的一部风靡全球的连续剧，讲述了一个为了拯救而进行越狱和逃亡的故事，仅仅第一季前13集就创下了1800万的收视率。《越狱》作为最受欢迎的美剧之一，不仅在美国家喻户晓，而且几乎成为全球英语学习者必看的连续剧，它不仅仅有着紧张剧情情节，剧中角色之间幽默诙谐的台词更是让观众们津津乐道。双关语的运用更是在《越狱》中，不同角色在语言表达上体验出不同性格个性的一种方式，使得原本平淡的台词显现的更有活力，更能吸引到观众。

ABSTRACT

This thesis is a research about English puns through actor’s lines in the famous U.S.TV show "Prison Break" from several points of view such as pragmatics and psychology.
Puns play an important role in the history of human civilization. Using puns while creating is delighted to hear and see. Furthermore, English puns are the most controversial linguistic phenomenon and rhetorical devices.
The TV play series “Prison Break” which was released by U.S. FOX TV station started in 2005 and became popular all over the world soon. It tells a story about escaping from prison in order to rescue. The drama got a record of 18,000,000 audiences rating just in its first 13 sets of the 1st season. “Prison Break” is not only being known in the U.S., but also becomes the majority of English learners’ choice. There are not only tense stories in “Prison Break”, but also facetious lines between roles which attract audiences. Use of puns in “Prison Break” is a way to tell the different character personalities between different roles which makes the original plain lines appeared more dynamic, more attractive to the audience.

 Introduction
1.1 Main Purpose
Among the wide range of language applications，pun is one of the most impressive rhetoric. In many advertisements, speeches, movie dialogues and our daily lives, pun stand on an important position as his expressing the double meanings in a humorous and concise way. American shows are very popular in young people’s worlds. It not only based on the splendid story line, but also is full of linguistic attractions in the dialogues.
I choose this subject in two reasons. First, “Prison break” as the most successful American show in the world has hundreds of thousands of fans, I am one of the “prison break” fans. And through the show’s story can help us understand the pun’s charm deeply and lively. Second, “prison break” has a lot of roles with different character. With the dialogues between the roles, you can almost find the puns in every where. Sometimes it reveals the crafty like T-bag, and sometimes it shows the wisdom of Scofield.
